We have wonderful news to report. We have met our $650,000 fund raising goal and have paid off the mortgage. Thanks to very generous donors we even have some money left over for eventualities. The Barnard Community Trust, on behalf of the entire community of Barnard, now owns the Barnard General Store building and the property surrounding it, including the lake front. We could not have done it without the support of the community, donors from all over the world, including our on-line donors. Every gift counted and we are grateful for each one we received.
The BCT ownership of the building has made it possible for the store to become a sustainable business. Joe and Jillian, the business owners, have had a very successful summer season and now are preparing for the slower fall and winter season.
This wonderful financial success does not mean that we are no longer interested in signing up new and renewing members. If you would like to become a new member or renew your existing membership, you can download and print the form that you can find on the first page of this website OR you can write to the Barnard Community Trust at PO Box 262 in Barnard, VT 05031 and we will be happy to send you one in the mail.
At 11:15 AM on Saturday, June 1st, Governor Peter Shumlin cut the ribbon to officially celebrate the reopening of the Barnard General Store. Yes. It was quite warm, but the enthusiasm of the crowd was even warmer. After the ribbon cutting and short speeches by the president of the Barnard Community Trust, Rick Carbin, Teo Zagar (who read a letter written by Senator Patrick Leahy for the occasion), and the governor, everyone went into the store and enjoyed what the store has to offer. It was a happy day for all.
The Barnard General Store has been reopened for one week. After almost a year, the town of Barnard has its core restored.
On Saturday, June 1st, at 11 o’clock AM, there will be a gathering at the BGS to celebrate what we have all been working toward for so many months. We would like to invite any and all who would like to celebrate with us to join Joe and Jillian, the BCT board and the governor of Vermont, Peter Shumlin, to join us on that special day.
Good news for Barnard. The doors are open at the BGS!!! Joe and Jillian and their families spent hours and hours getting ready for the first customers today. There are still a few wrinkles to be ironed out and some shelves to be filled, but Joe and Jillian seem to have unlimited energy and by the time school is out and summer is on the horizon, it will be in full swing. It is good to have people and action in the store again.
The hours for the store are:
I know that I am happy to be able to shop so close to home again. Please support the store and shop there when you can. Don’t forget that you can enjoy breakfast and lunch there too.
We all wish Jillian and Joe much success.
The Meet and Greet for the new business owners of the Barnard General Store was a great success.
As of March 3rd, the doors to the store will be closed for about one month. Joe and Jillian will be busy arranging the retail space and stocking shelves in anticipation of opening for business at the beginning of April. We will be sure to let you know when this happens.
The good news is that the store will be up and running again at the beginning of April. The bad news is that in order to prepare for this great event, the new business owners, Joe Minerva and Jillian Bradley will need to close the doors to the store. This will happen on February 28th. There will be no café in the mornings and no newspapers will be available until the store reopens. Of course we will keep you posted as to the exact date of that event.
The BCT will be hosting a gathering so everyone can meet Joe and Jillian. A decision has not yet been made as to when and where, but we will let you know as soon as the plans have been finalized.
