We have wonderful news to report. We have met our $650,000 fund raising goal and have paid off the mortgage. Thanks to very generous donors we even have some money left over for eventualities. The Barnard Community Trust, on behalf of the entire community of Barnard, now owns the Barnard General Store building and the property surrounding it, including the lake front. We could not have done it without the support of the community, donors from all over the world, including our on-line donors. Every gift counted and we are grateful for each one we received.
The BCT ownership of the building has made it possible for the store to become a sustainable business. Joe and Jillian, the business owners, have had a very successful summer season and now are preparing for the slower fall and winter season.
This wonderful financial success does not mean that we are no longer interested in signing up new and renewing members. If you would like to become a new member or renew your existing membership, you can download and print the form that you can find on the first page of this website OR you can write to the Barnard Community Trust at PO Box 262 in Barnard, VT 05031 and we will be happy to send you one in the mail.

On a bright and sunny Saturday in July, Barnard celebrated its 16th annual Street Dance with live music by several talented musical groups. Silver Lake was the backdrop for many activities including, a Community Art Project and visitors from near and far enjoying grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs and roasted corn. The large and enthusiastic crowd danced until it was time to say goodnight for another year.
This year, profits from this wonderful event will benefit the Barnard Community Trust in support of the Barnard General Store and Helping Hands in support of the community.
On Monday, July 22nd at 7pm, at the Town Hall in Barnard, the annual meeting of the Barnard Community Trust will be held to inform the members of the Trust as to what has been accomplished during the past year, get the financial report and re-elect board members.
All existing members and future members are welcome. There will be membership / donation forms available at the meeting.
We hope that many will attend.
Summer is in full swing and the area across from the General Store is being enjoyed by many.
The BCT has put out an appeal to all those who use this property for their swimming and picnicking enjoyment.
All state parks have discontinued making receptacles available for trash. Although this property is not state owned, it has become increasingly difficult for the Barnard Community Trust (owners of the property) and the store to keep up with trash removal.
For this reason we are asking everyone who uses the property to bring a bag and take any trash and/or recyclables with them.
Please help us keep this space clean and enjoyable for all. Thank you for your cooperation.
At 11:15 AM on Saturday, June 1st, Governor Peter Shumlin cut the ribbon to officially celebrate the reopening of the Barnard General Store. Yes. It was quite warm, but the enthusiasm of the crowd was even warmer. After the ribbon cutting and short speeches by the president of the Barnard Community Trust, Rick Carbin, Teo Zagar (who read a letter written by Senator Patrick Leahy for the occasion), and the governor, everyone went into the store and enjoyed what the store has to offer. It was a happy day for all.
